Outside ceremonies may be arranged with special permission. The Sayen site became municipal property in 1988, when Hamilton Township purchased the site from developer David Cellars. Today the garden contains more than 1,000 azaleas, nearly 500 rhododendrons, and more than 250,000 flowering bulbs for spring display, as well as ponds, bridges, gazebos, and walking trails. The garden began in 1912 when Frederick Sayen purchased the site with his wife, Anne Mellon Sayen, a daughter of the prominent Mellon family.

In 1912, the land was purchased by Fredrick Sayen and his wife Anne Mellon Sayen. They built their “bungalow” style home not far from the rubber mill in Hamilton Square. And even every day to get off your couch and get some fresh air. Head to a local park or just walk around your neighborhood. On September 1, 2006, an article in the Times of Trenton[2] disclosed that New Jersey officials were warned about pollution at the Sayen House and Gardens site three days before the park opened in 1991. The Mercer Rubber Company was also formerly owned by the Sayen family.

Ten New Jersey Winter Festivals to Spring You into 2024

Situated in historic Hamilton Square, Sayen Gardens provides a welcome sanctuary for nature lovers, garden enthusiasts, and history buffs alike. Follow the trail away from the house and it will take you on a short easy hike through the woods. When you emerge from the woods you will arrive at the arboretum, featuring dogwoods and other flowering trees. A park-like setting with a gazebo, a covered bridge, ponds and a small waterfall are a feast for the eyes. The curved bridge with the spouting fountain has a lovely Oriental feel when everything is in bloom. There’s a pond filled with water lilies and on a hot summer’s day you can hear plenty of bullfrogs among the reeds.

Nearly a century later, dedicated groundskeepers preserve Frederick’s creative vision. The meditative gardens glimmer with flower species from China, Japan and England. If you’re lucky enough to wed in the spring, you will be astonished by the abundance of azaleas, rhododendrons and dogwoods. You can escape to this oasis by meandering along walking trails and relaxing on a wooden bench by the pond. Your wedding photographs, taken beside elegant gazebos or above a white trellis bridge, will last a lifetime.

If you are enamored with Monet’s garden paintings and dream of a similar background for your special day, the Sayen House and Gardens are meant for you. Tucked away in the historic Hamilton Square, these grounds provide a serene, idyllic outdoor garden locale. For Impressionist painting connoisseurs, nature lovers and garden enthusiasts alike, the Sayen House and Gardens is a paradise. You can thank the devoted gardener and globetrotter Frederick Saye, who purchased the land in 1912. Frederick lovingly planted seeds he had collected on his exotic travels.

Former employees have corroborated the anonymous 1991 complaint, adding that a "pipe underneath the plant carried waste to a stream that ran through the Sayen Gardens property and eventually to Miry Run Brook." If you park in the Hughes Drive lot, walk towards the house. You will then notice several trails that lead to different sections of the park.

She added that the department is looking at preliminary recidivism rates for its parole program called Specialized Treatment Optimized Programming, for individuals released in the fiscal year 2018 to 2019. This examination comes after a CalMatters investigation found that the state was not collecting data on whether participants of that program were finding jobs or going back to prison. Before she landed at the re-entry program, she was at the Central California Women’s Facility in Chowchilla, where she took part in a labor apprenticeship program. Recently, Twyman completed a vocational training program at Saint John’s Program for Real Change, the Sacramento halfway house where she is serving out the rest of her sentence. Shortly afterward, she and six other women from the facility went to a job fair, where they handed their resumes to prospective employers. In the mid-1930s, when the county formally changed the name of Mint Canyon Highway to Sierra Highway in the area that is now Canyon Country, it imposed 5-digit street numbers there.

There, she and the other women are in a more dorm-like environment. The facility has a huge closet with donated clothing, some of which the women wore to the job fair. The decade-old voluntary re-entry program gives some state inmates the opportunity to serve out the rest of their sentence — anywhere from 60 days to two years — in places with fewer restrictions than prison. Once they complete certain requirements, they can get permission to go offsite for school, work or church. The program at Saint John’s currently has 47 participants, including those attending community college and some who are working toward getting their GED diplomas. At least one has graduated from Sacramento State University.

She praised the “California Model” for the “more humane treatment” of those who are incarcerated, which among other things gave her the chance to participate in the re-entry program. Pierson’s classes include about eight to 10 women at a time, so they can all have access to a computer in the small classroom at Saint John’s. “It’s important to focus on the ability of people to support themselves” after they get out of prison, Chen said. Data cited by the state shows that participation in both programs helped reduce repeat offenses — and could possibly save California some money. "The news was broken in the Signal issue of July 14. Nary a yip was raised about it." By the end of World War II, this allowance was becoming unmanageable.

As noted, portions of San Fernando Road and Sierra Highway outside of Newhall had 5-digit addresses since the 1930s, but they usually weren't displayed. Many Newhall businesses displayed their addresses, but many didn't. About the only time "house numbers" made news locally in the 1930s and '40s was when the fire department or post office complained they couldn't find their destinations because the house numbers didn't exist or had faded into oblivion.

Sand Canyon was renumbered in 1956, and the changeover was complete in 1957 when the county imposed the unified house numbering system on the more rural areas of Saugus, Solemint (today's Canyon Country) and Agua Dulce. House numbers were never really thought of again — until 1990 when a whippersnapper from the newfangled Santa Clarita City Council hatched a plan to change them back. So, in 1945, the Board of Supervisors imposed a system of house numbers for all unincorporated areas (including the SCV), radiating out from First and Main streets in downtown Los Angeles.

Block details:

"Not until cards began to come [in the mail] did realization spread that Newhall was due to lose another chunk of its quaint and charming village atmosphere," he lamented. "[Now] it seems that villagers are belatedly building up a slow burn on the subject. There are even rumors of petitions. Now, with the deal all set up, we are starting to raise a holler we should have started a month ago." In that sense, it was a bit like the expansion of Valencia west of Interstate 5 in the 21st Century. The county tried again with a new ordinance in 1933 that allowed cities and towns with their own numbering systems (such as Newhall) to keep them, as long as a wide swath of farms or citrus groves separated them from the next community with a numbering system.

“It’s amazing that I can get a degree for free,” she said. That is made possible by the California College Promise Grant, which waives enrollment fees for eligible state residents. Mary Xjimenez, a spokesperson for the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, said the agency’s recent research efforts are focused on evaluating its various programs’ effectiveness on recidivism. Michaela Twyman, 28, has been incarcerated for about three years, is now in the Female Community Reentry Program, and hopes to get out next summer.

The most recent state data shows that California’s recidivism rate fell from 44.6% in fiscal year 2017 to 2018 to 41.9% in fiscal year 2018 to 2019. The state uses conviction rates within three years as its primary measure of recidivism, and arrests and return to prison as supplemental measures. For the 2023 to 2024 fiscal year, California spent almost $112 million on the male re-entry program, and almost $28 million on its female counterpart. For 2024 to 2025, the budget for the program for men is almost $81 million, while the budget for the women’s program will increase to almost $35 million. The women themselves know they face an uncertain future, and while some worry their convictions will make it difficult for them to find jobs, a few recently told CalMatters they’re grateful for the program’s help. State touts transitional programs that aim to help individuals become self-sufficient after they leave prison.

The researchers also figured out that two of the programs for men cost taxpayers  less than the average annual cost of incarceration, which now stands at more than $132,000.

Then in 1925 and 1927, the Board of Supervisors adopted a pair of ordinances authorizing the County Engineer to establish house numbers for all unincorporated areas, and it required people to display them. The last two digits were (and still are) the lot number, aka house number; the rest of the address was (and is) the block number. Now, the county's numbering system would be imposed for real. The change came to Newhall and Saugus "proper" in the summer of 1955 at the request of the Newhall Chamber of Commerce and a motion by County Supervisor Roger Jessup. The Santa Clarita Valley was one of the last unincorporated territories to make the change.

Technically the new street numbers also made sense, but you'd need a pretty big slide rule to measure from First and Main in downtown L.A. (It's the reason all house numbers in the SCV get higher as you travel north or west.) The Newhall Signal advised measuring "from the number of the CHP Station south of town, which is 18110." The "unified house numbering system" in Los Angeles County traces its roots to 1920 when the Board of Supervisors instructed the County Engineer to establish numbers for an unincorporated area east of Pasadena.

Misty Fjords Boat Tour: My Explorer Cruise Review

misty ray cruise ship

The crew also offered chowder and vegetarian chili on the ride back. With eyes peeled to capture the beauty, a guest next to me spotted a lone mountain goat on a cliff. During our trip, the crew scanned the waters and coastline with binoculars for signs of wildlife.

Misty Fjords Boat Tour: My Explorer Cruise Review

He knew our time constraints and was able to work to get us back to our cruise ship on time. While Ketchikan experiences 13 feet of rain each year, we were fortunate to visit on one of the few dry days. However, with clear skies, and calm seas, we enjoyed the rock formations and landscapes from the outdoor deck.

Cruising To Misty Fjords

The monument is characterized by steep granite rock walls that rise dramatically from the tranquil waters below. In distance, the tour travels 110 nautical miles or 121 miles (202 km) roundtrip. Now, I see the appeal of the more expensive, shorter flightseeing tour.

ADA Accessibility of Tour:

You will have a guide who is knowledgeable about the wildlife that inhabits the area. Wildlife is abundant in Southeast Alaska and sightings are possible on any tour, however, this is not a designated wildlife-watching tour and nothing can be guaranteed. It is a charming ship well-suited for those who like vessels with good, nautical ambiance and don't mind smaller cabin accommodations. As with the outgoing journey, returning to Ketchikan took another two hours. Later in the day, it got relatively cool, so make sure you’re dressed appropriately. Guests could enjoy complimentary tea, coffee, and hot chocolate during our tour.

Although the fjord was picturesque, the travel time to access it was far too long. The occasional sound of nature punctuates the serenity of the fjord—water lapping against the vessel’s hull, the distant cry of a bald eagle, or the sound of a waterfall. With temperatures beginning to rise, the snow meltwater added to the volume of water in nearby waterfalls.

Misty Fjord Review

If you visit during a dry spell in the peak of summer, you may not see the cascades we enjoyed. The Behm Channel separates Revillagigedo Island from the mainland and offers panoramic views of snow-capped peaks and emerald-green cliffs that plunge dramatically into the water below. On the way, our naturalist pointed out the Saxman Native Village, another popular shore excursion. We saw an active bald eagle’s nest and many eagles resting in the trees, which were easy to spot with their white heads. When leaving Ketchikan on Revillagigedo Island, the vessel cruises slowly to adhere to the marine bylaws. Through the Tongass Narrows, you’ll see Pennock Island to your right and the signs of a vibrant fishing industry to the left.

The Misty Fjords & Wilderness Explorer Overview

Exceptions to the refund policy include multi-day packages and some day tours. Please refer to the specific refund policy listed on the individual tour product page. While our Ketchikan Misty Fjords tour was over five hours, some cruise lines sell a shortened one of 4-1/2 hours. Should you sail a shortened itinerary, you’ll only spend 30 minutes in the fjord.

From non-stop thrills to mouthwatering dining and the hit Broadway musical Grease, this fan-favorite is your ticket to a memory-maxing getaway. With just two passenger decks and only 10 passengers and a crew of five, it's easy to quickly feel at home onboard. A cozy main lounge and salon acts as the social gathering hub of the ship, while a small dining table adjacent allows for passengers to grab meals together. Please review your finalized ticket voucher for complete instructions.

Amazing experiences coming soon.

Scheduled activities are few and far between, and that's how passengers like it. The fjords are home to harbor seals, black bears, brown bears, bald eagles, and pigeon guillemots. Everywhere you look, the landscape is dotted with mesmerizing waterfalls. However, the shortened itinerary determines how much time you’ll spend exploring the wilderness area.

All refunds are processed through Alaska Shore Excursions, and will not be processed through any cruise line or local tour provider. Refunds will appear under Alaska Shore Excursions on your bank/credit card statement. Credit card refunds are processed within 10 business days of the request.

While the boat had two levels with comfortable seating, the top upper level filled up fast. The vessel had a maximum capacity of 149, but we cruised with 77 plus the crew of six. The two-tiered watercraft has comfortable seating, much like you find on a luxury coach. If you get a window seat, you’ll enjoy a front-row view to see marine wildlife.

The Misty Fjords & Wilderness Explorer Cruise offers a fantastic way to experience this classic fjord. During the excursion, you’ll learn how nature creates these steep fjords and discover the hidden corners of its mist-shrouded landscapes. Located 40 miles east of the Ketchikan cruise port, most travelers access it on a port day from their cruise ship. Since large cruise ships can’t access the narrow fjord, you have two options to visit; by air or by sea. Introducing the new Icon of the Seas℠, a whole new class of Royal Caribbean® adventure.

Seattle to Alaska: 7-Day Inside Passage Cruise

cruise ships out of seattle

Norwegian Encore and Norwegian Bliss are also our top picks for ships operating the best Alaska cruises from Seattle for solo travelers. Between these two, it's a tossup, though we put Norwegian Bliss in the headline above since, well, we already gave Norwegian Encore a turn in the limelight with the best-for-luxury category. Our pick for the best Alaska cruises from Seattle for budget travelers may come as a surprise to many cruise aficionados. That's because it's not the Alaska voyages from Seattle offered by the North American cruise line best known for budget sailings — Carnival Cruise Line.

Getting to the Port of Seattle (Transportation)

If you’re flying in for your cruise, it’s always a good idea to plan to arrive a day early. This way if anything goes awry with your flights — equipment delays, weather, computer issues, etc. — then you still have plenty of time to get to the port on cruise day. Unlike other cruise ports, the terminals aren’t located at one single spot. When it comes to departure ports, it’s tough to beat a destination like Seattle. As a world-class city tucked into one of the most beautiful regions on the planet, there’s a ton to see and do in the area.

Easy Ways to Get from the Seattle Airport to the Cruise Port

Our Princess fleet includes some of the best cruises from Seattle. Find the comforts of home along with the luxuries you deserve on board any of our ships. Glaciers, wildlife and mountains await you on a cruise from Seattle to Alaska. Our roundtrip voyages bring you up close to untouched landmarks, including Glacier Bay National Park or Endicott Arm & Dawes Glacier. Fish for salmon in Ketchikan, meet sled dogs in Juneau and pan for gold in Skagway. Experience it all with Princess, the #1 cruise line in Alaska.

CRUISES TO ALASKA

Currently there are two cruise ship terminals in Seattle – one, the Bell Street Cruise Terminal, at Pier 66 and the other, the Smith Cove Cruise Terminal, at Pier 91. It was also announced a few years ago that plans for a third terminal at Pier 46 are underway – it seems my prolific lobbying efforts have paid off. The staff then picks them up and they are sent to the airport and loaded on the plane.

These can be convenient and a good value if you’re traveling solo or in a small party, but can become costly for a larger group. Statistical data shows that an average turnaround cruise tourist spends USD 1547 in the city (on hotels/lodging, dining/drinking, transportation, shopping). Each vessel call generates USD 4,2 million for the region.

This was Washington state's first time when a single cargo terminal handled 1 million containers in a year. Container Terminal 18 is in North Harbor (Northwest Seaport). In April 2018, CT 18 became the first in Puget Sound with moved 5500 TEUs on and off a single boxship (container carrier), which averaged 30 gantry-crane moves per hour. In 2018, CT 18 was upgraded with new RTGs (rubber-tired gantry cranes), resulting in added two new shipping routes - AL5 (Transatlantic by THE Alliance) and PNS (Pacific Northwest Service by SM Lines). During the Port's inaugural cruise season (1999) were handled only 6 ship calls and 6615 passengers.

That way you can explore the city for the day or simply head to the airport without worrying about your luggage. There is also RV and oversized vehicle parking available at Pier 91. While you don’t have to reserve ahead of time, reservations are available so that you can have one less thing to worry about on cruise day. If you’re sailing from Seattle, then you are almost assuredly headed to Alaska. The port serves as a jumping off point for Alaskan cruises, most of them lasting a week.

Cruise ships are back in Seattle, but not quite back to normal - Crosscut

Cruise ships are back in Seattle, but not quite back to normal.

We have a 50-year legacy of sharing the best places and experiences with our guests. On an Alaska cruise, unpack once and explore glaciers, wildlife and national parks. Nearly a dozen major cruise ships operate Alaska cruises out of Seattle during the summer months, giving cruisers plenty of choice.

What cruise trip options do I have from Seattle?

Bring binoculars and scan both the shore and the waves for wildlife like brown bears and migrating whales while Park Rangers teach you the history and geology of the park. This 30-mile waterway is surrounded by cliffs, valleys and dozens of waterfalls. Icebergs and harbor seals decorate the water below while Dawes Glacier soars into the sky above. Revel in the beauty of Mother Nature’s masterpiece and listen closely as the scenery whispers secrets of times long ago during your cruise to Alaska. When you cruise to Alaska from Seattle, encounter unique ports of call that are rich in history, culture and natural beauty. Follow in the footsteps of the Yukon Gold Rush on an Alaska cruise from Seattle to some of the world’s most scenic wonders.

The trains were operated between January and April 2017, when the Alaskan cruising season begins. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on January 10 at University of Washington (train station). On September 23, 2017, Port Seattle welcomed its 1 millionth cruise tourist in a single Alaskan season (2 passengers on HAL's Eurodam). Industry's regional economic impact in 2017 surpassed USD 500 million. Remove the hassle from air travel and give yourself the gift of flexibility, time and a thicker wallet with Princess EZair flights. We negotiate lower rates with the airlines, allow you to modify your flight up to 45 days prior with no penalty and protect you if your flight is late or canceled.

To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link. Let Princess pick you up from the airport and take you directly to your ship or hotel when you arrive, even if you didn't book your airfare through us. Holland America Line Flight Ease® offers specially negotiated low prices, a convenient and worry-free way to book air travel, late-arrival protection, and the freedom to change your flights with no change fees.

A metered ride to/from the airport will likely cost you between $50-$80, depending on traffic. This is a good option if you don’t want to wait for a shuttle to fill or have three or four people traveling in your party. One nice perk is that some hotels cater to cruise passengers with perks like shuttles to the cruise port or cruise parking. To see our list of hotels with cruise parking, click here. We also have a list of hotels with shuttles to the Seattle cruise port.

The seaport of Washington State is nicknamed ”The Emerald City“. It currently has 2 passenger terminals - "Terminal 91" and "Bell Street Pier Cruise Terminal" (aka "Pier 66"), plus 1 new/planned (Pier 46). Fishermen's Terminal (on Salmon Bay) is the homeport (dock) for Washington state's North Pacific Fishing Fleet (commercial fishing vessels). In 2024, the cruise port reported a total of 275 booked berthings with estimated 800,000+ passengers. In late-November 2018, Port Seattle's Terminal 18 (operated by SSA Marine Inc) surpassed the 1 million TEU-container volume.

cruise ships out of seattle

The new facility can handle ULCV (ultra-large container vessels/boxships), supports ~6600 direct jobs and generates USD 2+ billion in annual business activities. From the US$ 340M, the private company SSA Terminals (subsidiary of SSA Marine Inc) contributed US$ 160M. The 185-acre (75-hectares) terminal will be open in 2 phases - one berth in 2021-Q1, and the other in 2023. Terminal 5 can handle simultaneously 2 large boxships (max capacity 18,000 TEU-containers). Port Seattle's North and South harbor container terminals can handle ships with max capacity 14,000 TEUs. In 2023 (April-October) the Port received 291 ship calls and 1,778 million passengers.

Since 2019, Terminal 46 is no longer used for international container shipping. The new facility will also have shoreside power capabilities. In August 2023, the Port's Commission approved US$32,6M budget for transforming the Ship Supply Building (Port's oldest, located at Fishermen’s Terminal)  into a Maritime Innovation Center. Furthermore, Cruise Critic makes no guarantees for availability of prices advertised on our site. Listed prices may have blackout dates, qualifications or restrictions. But it is possible to vacation on the mega-ship without giving into any of its upcharged restaurants and activities. If you're strong enough to do so, here's what your seven nights on Icon of the Seas could look like.

We’ll scan the barcode at the door and you’re good to go. If you want to stick to seafood, go with one of the entrees like roasted halibut, red snapper, Dover sole, broiled lobster tail or the crabcake about which I was raving earlier. If meat is more to your liking, pick something from the grill — free-range chicken, a pork chop or prime New York strip steak — instead.

The closest Marriott is in Salisbury (about 40 minutes away). There are other hotels listed at  that are either right in Crisfield or close by. However, you don’t need a seat to enjoy the entertainment. Come on up when you hear your song and hit the dance floor, or just stand wherever you can and enjoy the music. And as it’s always been, there’s plenty of open seating on the lower level. If your plans change and you need to cancel your reservation, or change it to a different date, please give us a call at least 24 hours prior to departure.

Although the official dress code is "cruise casual," you might want to dress up a bit for dinner at Rudi's, given the atmosphere. However, Sodamin truly shines with his latest venture, Rudi's Seagrill on Carnival Cruise Line's Excel Class ships, which are the newest in the fleet. You can also read the documentation to learn about Wordfence's blocking tools, or visit wordfence.com to learn more about Wordfence.

A budget vacation on Royal Caribbean's new wildly popular Icon of the Seas is possible. Just be prepared to stay sober, repeat meals, and pay at least $265 a day. You'll get a meet and greet with the chefs and a personally signed Cooking with Amare cookbook from Chef Max (NY Knicks star Amare Stoudemire's personal chef).

National Hard Crab Derby Crab Picking Champion Hurricane Hazel demonstrates crab picking techniques. Alcoholic beverages are charged a la carte unless you have a drink package that covers the price. To top it off, enjoy dishes such as apple cheesecake with limoncello whipped cream, chocolate truffle cake, white chocolate bread pudding or key lime pie for dessert.

Once you submit your inquiry, you will then receive a link via email and text, which will prompt you to make a $25.00 deposit on the total ticket cost.

Crab Place gift cards are the perfect way to send seafood to family and friends. Go beyond the traditional waterfront restaurant experience and join us for a cruise filled with delicious food and beverages, along with scenery that you won’t forget. We’ve had people in the past book their hotel stay in Solomon’s Island or Lexington Park. Marriott’s online tool shows hotels in those areas being miles from the event (which it is). Unless you’ve brought a high-quality raft, that hotel probably isn’t suitable.

Adults can dine there for $49 per person, which includes a starter, main and dessert. Kids 11 and younger can order from the children's menu for $15. Starters include blue mussels, seared shrimp, oysters and the aforementioned lobster mac and cheese. Soup and salad choices include seafood bisque, fisherman's stew, house tossed salad or baby romaine with cauliflower and honey nut squash. Although Carnival has had onboard seafood options for years, this is a far cry from the pool deck's Seafood Shack (which recently sold me a mediocre crabcake). Instead, at Rudi's, you'll find a don't-miss lobster mac and cheese, plenty of meat and seafood selections, and crabcakes that are actually worth the price of admission.

This New Ship Will Sail the U S. on Some of the Country's Most Beautiful Rivers

american serenade cruise ship

The American Serenade introduces an updated modern interior design, integrating an elegant and refined aesthetic with a tradition for the spacious comfort found aboard all of American Cruise Lines ships. Drawing inspiration from the geography across America, the new interior design highlights natural textural elements and serene color palettes. She also showcases panoramic views throughout, including an impressive four-story glass atrium in the center of the ship. American Serenade also features an on board fitness center and many spacious lounges where you can relax after the day’s adventures. To that end, passengers will find cabins that all feature full private balconies and plenty of living space, with passenger corridors anchored by a four-story atrium topped by a skylight that lets in plenty of natural light.

ACL's first Coastal Cat/catamaran cruise ship American Eagle successfully passes sea trials

The first one, American Eagle (named after their first ship in 1972) has launched, and the second, American Glory, is coming later this year. If you’re looking for a more intimate, personalized cruise experience, ACL fits the bill. With a motto of “small ship cruising done perfectly,” they provide guests with the closest thing to a turnkey, all-inclusive vacation. Their ships can be found on every major U.S. waterway and along the coastlines all the way to Alaska, showcasing the best America has to offer. We are taking their Upper Mississippi, fall foliage cruise, which starts in Alton, Illinois, just outside St. Louis, and ends in Red Wing, Minnesota.

AAR cabins on Deck 1 have a steel door that opens to a private balcony and are slightly smaller, at 275 square feet. AAM and AAC categories are located on Decks 3 and 2, respectively, and include floor-to-ceiling glass sliding balcony doors. AAM rooms are 350 square feet, with AAC rooms coming in just a bit smaller at 315 square feet -- still plenty spacious for a couple travelling together.

ACL-American Cruise Lines begins its biggest season ever on the Mississippi

american serenade cruise ship

Begin planning your U.S. cruise adventure with American Cruise Lines today. From the coast of Maine, to the mighty Mississippi and Pacific Northwest, our Free Cruise Guide provides detailed information about all of our more than 50 U.S. itinerary options.

Grand Suite Private Balcony

The line's itineraries appeal to Americans who want to see more of their own country with ease, and thus, appeal to folks with mobility issues who may not be able to travel in comfort any other way. The ship has two elevators that traverse all decks but the uppermost Sun Deck, and one wheelchair-accessible motorcoach is available to passengers who require it for shore excursions. Two Sun Deck is fitted with sunbathing and shaded seating areas, but unlike the bigger sisterships, it lacks the deck-games area (with Putting Green and Shuffleboard). Located on the third deck, these spacious staterooms feature commanding views of the passing river landscapes. Ft., there is plenty of room to enjoy the tasteful comfort of your surroundings.

American Cruise Lines Makes the History of America Come Alive

Traditionally for large-sized USA riverboats, American Serenade has a fore-located boarding ramp (bow-location on Deck 1) that allows passengers to go ashore at any place along the ACL's cruisetour itinerary. The ramp has an innovative design being constructed as a retractable gangway (passenger bridge). The technology is often implemented on some of the largest ferries and features an opening bow door. It all adds up to an enriching experience on the waterways of America -- one American Cruise Lines is uniquely poised to deliver.

The service from American crewmembers is extolled in the company's brochures, but service was a weak point aboard American Serenade, particularly when it came to the Main Dining Room. While there are crew who are stellar and personable in doing their jobs, they are let down by more junior members who have experience that can be measured in days, not years. The ship is whisper-quiet, and noise is really only noticeable when docking and undocking.

These staterooms have all the comforts of a fine hotel and feature floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors with a private balcony where you can sit back, relax and watch the rolling river views. All staterooms include individual climate control systems, in-room Keurig coffee brewers, ample storage, an array of toiletries, complimentary WiFi, Satellite TV, and a DVD player. Ft. of relaxing space, each Veranda suite provides the perfect balance of comfort and luxury. Be treated to a fruit and cheese plate when you arrive and cheers with a complimentary bottle of premium champagne as you begin your adventure.

American Serenade is a Spacious Winner

During the launch ceremonies, the vessel's hull (yard number 144) is floated out from drydock into Wicomico River, then positioned in the shipyard's East Outfitting Basin to receive the superstructure (upper decks) and final outfitting. The 2023-built MS American Serenade cruise ship is the sixth/last newbuild in the American Cruise Lines' "Modern Riverboat" fleet. Ditto Paducah, Kentucky -- a quiet town that has an unusual proliferation of cool shops, unique bars and lounges, and events. During our visit, posters promoted the "Cars and Cigars" event happening that Saturday evening, and some shops proudly displayed Pride flags. American Serenade, launched this past spring, is the sixth of American Cruise Line's modern riverboats, following the debut of American Harmony, American Jazz, American Melody and American Symphony. Cruise Critic hopped onboard American Serenade for a weeklong voyage from Nashville to Chattanooga, sailing the Cumberland, Ohio, and Tennessee rivers to find out what makes the largest U.S.-flagged cruise line in the nation tick.

The shipowner American Cruise Lines (ACL) is the USA's largest river cruise company (headquarters in Guilford Connecticut) operational since 1991. The company specializes in cruise shipping on the USA's largest navigable inland waterways (rivers and lakes) as well as in cruises along the US East Coast, US West Coast and Florida. American Cruise Lines offers a very interesting cruise following the path of Lewis and Clark on the Snake and Columbia rivers. Each day is filled with excursions and entertaining presentations of this historic adventure. There are a multitude of daily excursions to choose from some are complementary others are fee based. You also had time to peruse each historic port along the way including The Dalles and Astoria.

An onboard entertainment system offers live TV channels and on-demand movies, with many of the latter being geographically or historically relevant. With no theater on the ship, the River Lounge serves as entertainment center for musical performances, games, talks by guest speaker Mark Wisner and rundowns of the next day events by Brandon and Rachel. Titled “Chart Your Course,” the preview of tomorrow’s activities is quite useful and not to be missed.

This is where the river is the most scenic, flowing by tall bluffs and through habitats populated by bald eagles. And if the gorgeous new American Serenade is any indication, the company is only just getting started. Our weeklong voyage aboard the brand-new American Serenade was just one of many interesting itineraries the company offers that explore the far reaches of America's coastlines and waterways. Sure, ACL has a large presence on the Upper and Lower Mississippi and Columbia and Snake rivers, as one would expect.

Those ready to set sail can see all the itineraries and available dates at americancruiselines.com. We were delighted to find two managers who were on our previous ACL cruise — Jerry, the cruise director, and Skylar, who just happened to share the same birthday as Pam. Still, we suggest creating an option for late snacking after 9 or 10 pm, such as pizza by the slice or to-go sandwiches and desserts. Dining is open seating, and after a few days, guests tended to gravitate to the same table or at least the side of the room to have the servers they have come to know.

What People Really Wear on Cruise Formal Nights Photos

princess cruise formal night

Take advantage of our onboard laundry, press-only and professional cleaning service for a nominal fee. All laundry is returned within 48 hours, or on the same day with our express service. In the event of unexpected travel delays and emergencies, please remember to bring additional prescription medication for at least 2 weeks beyond the length of the cruise.

Men’s Dress Code

If you’re opting out of formal night attire, you don’t need to stay in your stateroom all night! Formal night dress code is generally only required in the main dining room during dinner. (Some cruise lines also require formal attire in specialty restaurants on formal nights). Men may wear slacks with collared dress shirts or sweaters, but jackets are optional. Women should choose dresses, pantsuits or skirts or slacks with nice tops.

Onboard FAQ

princess cruise formal night

Many cruise lines have a “smart casual” dress code in their specialty restaurants, making them a popular choice on formal nights for those who want to avoid dressing up. But double-check dress codes—some cruise lines (Carnival for example) have the same dress code in their specialty restaurants as in the MDR on formal nights. Evenings are typically “elegant casual,” and recommended attire includes slacks with collared dress shirts or sweaters for men, but jackets are optional. Women should choose dresses, pantsuits or skirts, or slacks with nice tops.

Special Events at Sea

Most people do get a little dressed up for dinner even though they don’t go all out formal. Uniformity across the fleet is a bit more likely on this small-ship upscale cruise line. In other words, Oceania Riviera's dress code is likely enforced the same as Oceania Regatta's dress code. What Paul Gauguin Cruises calls elegant resort wear is essentially a country club casual dress code and is requested for most evenings. Men should wear slacks and collared shirts, while women should don dresses, skirts or slacks with blouses or sweaters. Oceania's dress code is simple and casual, which may come as a welcome surprise to those who know the line as a luxury option.

Does Everyone on the Ship Dress Up?

If dressing up just isn’t your thing, you can absolutely skip formal night on a cruise! The main dining room will have a formal dress code, but you can always have dinner at the buffet or order room service. In general, cruise lines that have formal nights will have two each week on a seven-day cruise. On short cruises (less than five days), there often isn’t a formal night. When you’re deciding what to wear for formal night on a cruise, it’s a good idea to know how many formal nights your sailing will have.

MSC vs Royal Caribbean: my opinion after I’ve tried both!

As a courtesy, the onboard staff will assist in following up with the airline; however, any costs incurred in forwarding the luggage to the ship is at the guest’s expense. Guests who have purchased travel protection should verify with their policy carrier regarding Baggage Protection, which may include baggage delay coverage. Please keep all receipts for submission and contact your travel plan administrator for assistance. Typically, airlines are able to arrange alternative flights at the airline counter for passengers to continue with their travel to the point of embarkation. It is the airline’s responsibility to make alternate flight arrangements resulting from a delay or cancellation. Every Princess ship is equipped with an advanced cellular communications network.

If you plan on checking out a specialty restaurant (a cover charge applies) their dress code is always smart casual. The staterooms are comfortable as can be, whether you’re sailing in an interior or a suite. But of course the higher the category, the nicer the experience. If you want the freedom to go outside from your stateroom, go with a balcony. (No matter where we sail, there’s always a great view.) And if you want more space – and a larger bathroom with tub – we recommend a mini suite.

Onboard Activities

Pizza, burgers, hot dogs and ice cream can be found at various dining locations. Complimentary jarred stage 1 & 2 baby food is available, if requested in advance via the Cruise Personalizer. Additionally, pureed fruits or veggies can be requested in the main dining room. During Viking cruises to Alaska and Antarctica dress codes are likely to be even more relaxed as outdoor ondeck and onshore activities often take place well into the evenings. It's a bit of a challenge to bundle up for sky watching in fancy clothes. As on other lines, you may find that the official dress code may be lightly enforced on some ships, often in relation to destination and even size of the ship.

Revel in time-honored traditions, from Halloween pumpkin carving and a Thanksgiving turkey carving contest, to Hanukkah festivities, Christmas carolers and our famous Atrium snowfall. There's no better place to celebrate than on a Princess ship. Enjoy live music, folkloric performances, acrobats and jugglers, even cocktail and food carving demonstrations. Plus, you'll find great shopping, gourmet treats in the International Café, bars, and more great cruise entertainment only a few steps away.

Every cruise also features a great selection of recent hit feature films for your viewing pleasure. Movies Under the Stars lights up your life - day and night. Princess Cruises offers private shipboard ceremonies for those guests who want to honor their loved ones by resting their ashes at sea. This service must be arranged prior to sailing and approved in advance.

Also through the MedallionClass® app, you can chat/text with your kids, anywhere on board. Camp Discovery and Beach House Teen Lounge is open during the day and evening for your convenience, on sea days and port days. From 10PM – 1AM, we offer group babysitting in the centers for kids ages 3-11 for $5 per child per hour.

Once you arrive onboard, report this delay to the Passenger Services Desk, providing the claim number and bag description. If your delay involves missing the ship in the port of embarkation, you must immediately contact the En Route Desk to confirm that you will be permitted to join the vessel at the next port of call. In certain instance, you will not be permitted to join the vessel at the next port, if the late embarkation will result in a violation of the Passenger Vessel Services Act (PVSA). In addition, kosher meals and baby food are available upon advance written request.
